There was nothing like swimming laps for clearing the mind. Jogging was Irina's usual preference, but jogging in cold rain was no fun. Better to be proper wet in the pool than cold and wet from being outside. It was a mad dash from the dorms to the pool facilities. She changed into her PT uniform and showered, the warm water feeling much more refreshing than rain.
A steady 400m warmup then into her planned workout. She started out swimming 500m followed by a 50m sprint. Each cycle, she reduced the longer swim by 50m. For good measure, Irina counted each lap aloud in Chinese. She needed more than just listening to radio stations and reading newspapers to keep her language skills sharp. It was a never-ending process of adding new words to her vocabulary and keeping up all the old ones.
In the water, she could forget about everything else. That her boyfriend didn't want to visit, that her mother called daily to make sure her daughter was still alive, that she'd be purposefully trying to avoid getting to know people. For now, her world was only the water and the four walls of the pool.

Chloe was already wet, she’d gone for her normal jog that morning even if it had been in the cold rain. When she’d arrived at the gym part of her was disappointed that Jay was nowhere to be found. Granted she’d just spent the night with him, but she couldn’t help it if she already missed him. Grabbing her suit out of her locker and putting it on she decided on a few laps, nothing serious just enough to clear her mind.
Walking into the pool Chloe noticed another swimmer going about a workout. She couldn’t remember if she’d ever seen this girl before or not, but she simply watched her swim as she eased herself into the pool. Just the feeling of being surrounded by the warm water was enough to relax her some. She pushed off underwater and felt the water flowing around her.
She did a few laps at a leisurely pace before picking up her speed a bit to something a little faster. Not even bothering to count her laps she just swam trying to forget that she probably should call her parents tonight since she’d been avoiding their calls recently. Pushing thoughts of her parents aside, her mind happily wandered to thoughts of Jay again… thoughts of how happy he made her. As happy as she was she’d been trying to avoid the nagging feeling that someone was going to find out about them and put an end to things before they even got started.
She pulled up for a moment at the next wall and just hung there off the wall kicking her feet gently, maybe swimming wasn’t as good at clearing her mind as she had thought… it just gave her more time to think, which could be dangerous. Chloe pulled herself out of the pool and turned to dangle her feet in the water, she looked for the other swimmer and see if she was still doing laps, maybe a bit of conversation would be good for her.
