rp etiquette
Not everyone has been around the RPing community forever. Some people are new and have lots of questions pertaining to etiquette on forums. So here is a collection of many things that might be helpful!!!
TAGGING
Please ask before tagging someone in a thread. They may not be aware of the plot, may have too many threads, or maybe they just don't like group threads. That's okay. But it is always polite to ask before tagging someone into a thread.
REPLIES
It is always correct manners to try and match another person's post. If you are not as strong of an rper that is okay too. Just before joining an open thread ask them if it is okay. No one bites. As a general rule, there is no word count.
OPEN THREADS
Open threads are considered open until someone replies, in which case it is then proper rp manners to contact the creator of the post.
GODMODDING
For those who do not know what god modding is, it is assuming control of a character that is written by another writer. Little things sometimes overlooked include: mentioning this characters presence in a post with which they are not involved (see exceptions below), having another writer's character speak, presuming a relationship between characters, or moving another player around.
Exceptions to god modding
Occasionally some role players have been playing together for a while and know what the other writer allows and does not allow. For example, sometimes it makes sense for a thread starter for both to start off in the same room. This is okay IF YOU HAVE ASKED the other writer. Assuming relationships is never okay, however plotting with the other writer to have this happen IS perfectly acceptable. When in doubt it is always better to ask
Please do not hassle members, we all work at different rates and are a board who understands everyone's limitations.
RELATIONSHIPS
Don't force anything on other writers, if they aren't comfortable with it; then don't do it. End of story. If you want to make future plot plans please check to make sure they are OKAY with the other writer.
READING POSTS
It is suggested you read posts thoroughly and pay attention to which board a thread was posted on. This will answer a lot of questions that may have already been answered. We are all guilty of this at some point in our role playing careers. If someone is sitting in a restaurant, then the responding character should not post in a bar. (The exception to this is board wide threads that involve multiple people and agencies but everyone needs to see what is going on)
MARKING POSTS
If you are participating in a multi character thread (more than 3 people) especially with board wide threads, then it is polite to mark at the top of your post your LOCATION. This is so that characters who are responding know who is communicating with them. You may also tag those characters with whom there is immediate interaction to cause less confusion.
POSTING ORDER
As a general rule, there is never a posting order. Just be kind and courteous. However, please remember not to hijack a thread or double post.
